The Most Common Types of Learning Disabilities Found in Kids and Adults, According to Experts

If you have an intellectual disability, your brain works differently. Learning disabilities are “when someone has an impairment in learning or processing new information or skills,” Amy Baxi, MD medical doctor at Lenox Hill Hospital, tells Health. This could cause difficulties in speaking, language writing, reading or math.

The definition of learning disabilities is essential, as is understanding what a disability isn’t.

The term “learning disability,” also known as a learning disorder, isn’t related to low cognition or intelligence. Sabrina Romanoff, a Clinical psychologist who is also a professor at Yeshiva University in New York City, tells the Health. The condition is not correlated with opposing school or home environment, she says. “Dyscalculia generally refers to problems acquiring basic math skills, but not to problems with reasoning,” Romanoff declares.

Tasks requiring numbers can be more difficult for those suffering from this disorder, Dr Baxi says. From calculating the tip’s length to writing down the digits of someone’s mathematics, numbers are always present in daily life. Those who suffer from this disorder might notice the effect in many aspects of everyday life.

A new research study estimates that anywhere from 3 to 7 per cent of people suffer from dyscalculia.



The people who suffer from this type of writing impairment cannot write and have poor fine motor abilities, Schiff says. They are unable to organize numbers, letters or words on a page or any other space that is defined, she adds.

Other conditions of learning to be aware of

Certain conditions aren’t recognized as learning disorders or specifically identified in the DSM-V Diagnostic Guide utilized to diagnose professionals in the field of mental health experts. However, they’re still worthy of consideration, as they could overlap or frequently come into the lives of people suffering from learning disabilities.

Nonverbal learning disorders

In this type of problem, visual-spatial and motor abilities are affected as per the Mayo Clinic. Disorders of learning that are non-verbal (NLVD) may affect social skills and manifest as a struggle for understanding body language and comprehend the meaning of humour, Schiff says.


“Non-verbal learning disabilities are not considered learning disabilities. They are often signs of other disorders,” Dr Baxi notes. As opposed to being classified as a learning disability, dyspraxia is more commonly referred to as a disorder of developmental coordination. The condition “affects movement, physical coordination, and balance [and is] characterized by difficulty with muscle control,” she observes.

As Schiff explains, everyday tasks, such as dressing up or driving a car, can become challenging. This can also impact speech and writing as well as other related learning movements, Schiff says.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

“There is a misconception that the term learning disabilities is interchangeable with other disorders,” Schiff says, pointing out the fact that ADHD doesn’t constitute a learning disorder.


It’s also not unusual for children who have ADHD to also suffer from an underlying learning disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Having ADHD can impact a person’s learning ability because the focus is so essential to absorb information. Schiff highlights a critical distinction between ADHD and an educational disorder: “ADHD can be treated with medication, a learning disability cannot.”

Visual and auditory processing disorders

For these types of disorders, people have “difficulty receiving and responding to information that comes through the senses, despite normal hearing and vision,” Schiff describes.

For instance, a person with some auditory processing disorder might have difficulties hearing. However, there is nothing wrong with their ear. This is because the brain cells don’t process and “hear” sounds, according to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This could affect learning in various ways.
